FAQs

+ I’m new to therapy, what can I expect?

Starting therapy can feel exciting, intimidating, or somewhere in between. Many people worry about what to say, whether they’re “doing therapy right,” or if their concerns are significant enough to bring to therapy. The good news is that you don’t need to have everything figured out before you begin.

During our first few sessions, my focus is on getting to know you and understanding what brings you to therapy. I’ll spend time learning about your goals, important relationships, life experiences, strengths, challenges, and the broader context of your life. This helps me understand not only what is happening, but also the factors that may be contributing to your current experiences.

Therapy is a collaborative process, and no two therapy journeys look exactly the same. Depending on your needs and goals, our work together may focus on different aspects of your experiences, relationships, or personal growth. We will move at a pace that feels appropriate and work together to determine what feels most helpful for you.

Most importantly, you don’t need to have the right words or know exactly where to start. You’re welcome to share as much or as little as feels comfortable, and we’ll make sense of it together.

+ How long does therapy last?

The length of therapy varies depending on your goals, needs, and preferences. Some clients seek support around a specific challenge or life transition, while others choose to engage in longer-term therapy focused on deeper self-understanding and personal growth. We will regularly check in about your goals and determine together what feels most helpful.

+ How often will we meet?

Most clients begin with weekly sessions. Depending on your needs, goals, and progress, we may decide together to meet more or less frequently over time.

+ Where is your office located?

The office is located at 9820 Willow Creek Road Suite 445, San Diego, CA 92131 in Scripps Ranch.

+ What are your office hours?

I offer appointments Monday through Thursday between 11:00 AM and 7:00 PM. Because availability can change, I encourage you to reach out for current openings and scheduling options.

+ Do you offer virtual appointments?

Yes. I offer virtual therapy sessions to clients located anywhere in California. For telehealth services, you must be physically located in California at the time of your appointment.

+ Why don’t you accept insurance?

Working outside of insurance allows me greater flexibility in how I provide care. It reduces limitations related to diagnoses, treatment requirements, and session restrictions, allowing us to focus on your unique needs and goals.

If you have out-of-network benefits, I am happy to provide a superbill that you may submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. Reimbursement is determined by your specific insurance plan.

You may also be able to use funds from a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to pay for therapy services, depending on your plan’s requirements and eligibility guidelines.

+ Do you accept insurance?

Safe Harbor Therapy is an out-of-network, self-pay practice. Payment is due at the time of service. If you have out-of-network benefits, I can provide a superbill that you may submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.

+ Do you provide custody evaluations, psychological assessments, or court-related services?

My role is that of a treating therapist, which is different from the role of an evaluator or forensic expert.

As a result, I do not conduct custody evaluations, psychological assessments, or other forensic evaluations, and I generally do not provide recommendations regarding custody, visitation, or other legal matters.

If you are seeking an evaluation for court, custody, disability, employment, or another legal purpose, I can help direct you to providers who specialize in those services.

+ What is a superbill?

A superbill is an itemized receipt that you can submit to your insurance company to request reimbursement for out-of-network therapy services. If your plan includes out-of-network benefits, your insurance company may reimburse a portion of your session fee.

I am happy to provide a superbill upon request. Because reimbursement varies by insurance plan, I encourage you to contact your insurance provider directly to learn more about your out-of-network mental health benefits.

+ Do you offer a consultation?

Yes. I offer a complimentary 15-minute consultation to answer questions, discuss your goals, and help determine whether we’re a good fit for working together.
